![]() ![]() By the 19th century, Kepler's description had fallen into oblivion, so Wollaston's claim was never challenged. ![]() The basic optics were described 200 years earlier by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler in his Dioptrice (1611), but there is no evidence he or his contemporaries constructed a working camera lucida. The camera lucida was patented in 1806 by the English chemist William Hyde Wollaston. This allows the artist to duplicate key points of the scene on the drawing surface, thus aiding in the accurate rendering of perspective. The artist sees both scene and drawing surface simultaneously, as in a photographic double exposure. The camera lucida projects an optical superimposition of the subject being viewed, onto the surface upon which the artist is drawing. A camera lucida is an optical device used as a drawing aid by artists and microscopists. ![]()

This post will discuss Cakes and Ale or The Skeleton in the Cupboard. How is one to talk about one of one's favourite books (apology for the awkward redundancy)? I understand that although every writer (meaning simply the one who writes) comes across the same problem, they never confess it and they would come up at the end with a most lucid and engaging and most clever review of their much loved book.īut then again, this is only a blog, and it is late in the evening for me. Then, here I face a most serious problem. On second thought, after rereading what I wrote in 2013, I will just write the whole thing all over again. Recently I reread the book and I am again driven by this uncontrollable urge to talk about it I hope this time I will make it. Somehow I left whatever that I thought about it in mid-air. Part of this post was written on 24 October 2013 that must be the last time I finished reading Cakes and Ale. ![]() ![]() ![]() They don't know why but he walks out and takes his dog for a walk to a pond when he plucks out a grey hair. There were things I could do about that, like walk home, or tell my parents my older sister was always late to pick me up-but either of those would inevitably lead to an argument or two. ![]() It seemed unfair, spending three hours a day in a classroom during summer, only to wait another thirty minutes in the parking lot. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book is a masterpiece of mystery, a corker of a character study, and a love letter to pulp fiction. ![]() I was prepared to like the story anyway, but I was not prepared for this story to MAKE ME love the 20s and MAKE ME love the fact that these heroes will get together slowly, over the course of three twisty books, instead of all at once.Īnd now I've spent a couple of paragraphs gushing while simultaneously saying nothing about the actual story.
