"My whole life, I've always been an avid reader," Fordham said. From there, the story grew in her imagination, and the characters took on lives of their own. She also encounters a cast of characters, including the town's sheriff, Caleb.įordham said she wanted to explore historical fiction because of her interest in stories about foster families, and the setting seemed like a good starting point. In Azure Springs, a fictional town in Iowa, Em attempts to locate her long-lost sister while avoiding dangerous pursuers. "It kind of follows her journey as she re-enters society, trying to figure out who she is, deal with the losses she's experienced and find a future for herself," Fordham said. The story follows Em, an orphan who had traveled across the country in the late 1800s via the "orphan trains" that transported abandoned children from the streets of New York City to rural homes and farms throughout the United States, some more hospitable than others. She recently authored the book, "The Hope of Azure Springs," which is set to be published this summer. Local author Rachel Fordham found herself taking advice from one of her own characters recently when she and her family dealt with unanticipated hard times.įordham grew up in Washington and graduated from Shelton High School in 2002, though she currently resides in Port Townsend.
